Ag Arena in Opelousas and Ahtus Melder Camp in the Forest Hill area of Kisatchie National Forest
Starting in October 2009, the LSU AgCenter will be conducting a Master Horseman Program for adults in St. Landry Parish. The Master Horseman Program is designed to improve the overall knowledge and skills of horse people so they can serve as 4-H leaders. This program consists of nine sessions taught by LSU AgCenter equine experts, the LSU Vet School and other area leaders. (There will be one training class in Kisatchie National Forest near Forest Hill.) Each three- to four-hour session will include horse care and management in a classroom setting and riding and training in an arena. Application deadline is September 14, 2009. Open to all 4-H'ers in St. Helena, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa and Washington parishes. Youth should bring their own gun and it must be in a case. Youth will be responsible for their own shells. Only sizes 7.5, 8, or 9 will be allowed. 20-gauge shotguns will be available for anyone who does not own a gun. All youth will be charged $5.00 to help offset the cost of targets. Directions: About 2 miles east of Amite, take Hwy. 1054 north, go about .6 mile and turn onto VFW Road.

The 4-H Food Festival is an event in which 4-H'ers can bring cooked foods to be judged. The categories include: rice cookery, sugar cookery, ground beef cookery and seafood cookery. A consumer foods judging contest will also be held.

Concordia Parish Sheriff's Firing Range
4-H'ers will be given an overview of the program and have the opportunity to shoot a BB gun, pellet gun, rifle(22), and a shotgun(20 gauge) on the range! Cost is $5 per student/per meeting. Any 4th-12th grade student is eligible to participate.

Caldwell 4-H Photography Contest

Entries for the Caldwell 4-H photography contest are due on Thursday, December 17. All Caldwell 4-H members are eligible to enter this contest. Categories are story or series; people, structures or buildings; plants or animals. Your name, school, grade and contest category must be on the back of your entry. All photographs must be taken by the 4-H'er, but some guidance from parents, leaders, etc. is allowed. You can give your entry to the 4-H leader at your school or bring it to the 4-H office in Columbia. Complete rules and guidelines may be obtained from your 4-H leader or the 4-H office.

A Christmas party is planned for the Calcasieu-Cameron Horse Club members at the 4-H Office. Each member is asked to bring a small "horse related" gift, no more that $5 for Chinese gift exchange. Refreshments will be served and no horses needed.
